Text Messaging from my School and the District

The Rochester City School District uses text messaging as an additional means of communication with families and staff. Custodial parents and/or guardians and RCSD staff can opt in or out of receiving any texts that are sent from the district and/or schools they are associated with.
How do I receive texts?

When a custodial contact (parent and/or guardian) provides a mobile number to your child's school for the first time, the school messenger call system automatically sends a message asking them to opt-in the next day. If you do not have a mobile number on file, or are unsure, please contact your child’s school to update your contact information.
RCSD staff can also receive text messages from the District and school they support. Please be sure you have a mobile number selected as your preferred number in Peoplesoft to begin receiving messages.
Here is a sample of the message you should receive automatically on your device once we have a mobile number on file for you:

I think I may have opted out or never opted in. What do I do?

You can opt in or out of texts from the District and your child's school at any time after that by sending a text to the short code, 67587.
To opt in, text Y to short code 67587 to begin receiving text messages.
To opt out, text N to short code 67587 to stop receiving text messages.

How do I start receiving text messages from my school and the Rochester City School District?
Once a custodial parent or guardian has an SMS capable phone number added to Powerschool or an employee has entered an SMS capable number in Peoplesoft and marked it as 'preferred', they will automatically receive an opt-in text message from the short code the next day.
Custodial parents and guardians of an RCSD student are encouraged to contact their child's school to ensure their contact information is up-to-date in Powerschool.

I received a text message that says it’s from SchoolMessenger? What does it mean?
If it was from short code 67587, that was most likely the Opt-In Invitation message sent by SchoolMessenger on behalf of RCSD.
To continue receiving informational text messages from the district and your child's school(s) reply with “Y”.
If you do not reply, you won’t receive any future texts from our schools.

How do I opt out from receiving text messages?
If you are already receiving SMS text messages from the District and your school, you can opt out at any time by texting STOP to short code 67587 from the device you are receiving messages on.

I opted out of text messages but now I want to opt back in. How do I do that?
To opt in, text Y to short code 67587 to begin receiving text messages again.

Can I opt in to just receive text messages from my school and not the District or vice versa?
No. Once opted in, you will receive messages from both your child's school and the district. Opting out omits you from receiving messages from both also.

How do I know if my opt in /out worked?
After you text one of the key words to the short code, the system will ALWAYS respond back with one of three messages:

Any other response – or no response: indicates the recipient should contact their wireless device provider to have SMS messaging/premium content enabled if they wish to receive SMS text messages from their school and the district. -
Can I receive text messages in my home language?
Yes, the School Messenger call system allows the District and your child's school to translate SMS text messages into 38 different languages, including our district's top 5 languages. If you do not receive SMS messages in your home language but want to, please contact your child's school.
