Information About...The Department of Law
The Department of Law's mission is to advance the cause of urban education, render legal advice to the Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education and various departments, and represent the District in matters relating to state and federal laws, regulations and policies. The Department of Law serves as the District's advocate in legal and quasi-legal proceedings brought by and against the District involving students, employees, governmental entities and private citizens. The legal staff provide counsel on a daily basis to schools and District administrators. This sector represents the District and Board of Education at administrative and arbitration hearings related to collective bargaining agreements and state and federal law. The legal staff perform other duties at the request of the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education.
