    RCSD's partner, the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program presents the second annual Women in Manufacturing Summit on Wednesday, November 15th!

    The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program in partnership with the RTMA and MCC proudly presents the 2nd annual Women in Manufacturing Summit on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. We have a great panel of local women in advanced manufacturing that are excited to connect with students and educators.

    This is a hybrid event which is in-person at NextCorps in Downtown Rochester from 11 am to 1 pm with networking, lunch and a panel discussion. WIM is free of charge and you can register here. If you are registering a group, please select how many will attend from your school.

    If you cannot attend in person, your school can join us virtually from Noon to 1 pm via Zoom. If you want to attend virtually, please respond directly to Rich Turner and I will send a Zoom invite.

    ROC With Your Hands

    ROC with your hands

    The second annual ROC With Your Hands event is hosted by Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) was a success. Over 500 RCSD 8-12th graders attended. Students learned about local career opportunities, area manufacturing and technology colleges, and participated in hands-on activities. 100% of scholars who attended said they would attend this event again!

    Seniors & Graduates July 17th - August 25th, 2023

    Are you interested in pursuing a field in the trades and want to get started in a career right away?  Check out this opportunity from The North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Fund!   This is a pre-apprenticeship training program that runs from July 17th - August 25th, 2023, Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.

    This is an opportunity for recent graduates and community members to learn a skilled trade and carve a successful career path with great wages, benefits, and advancement opportunities. This is a free program providing an introduction to carpentry at training facilities across NYS. Each participant will receive a uniform as well as a starter tool kit. This opportunity can lead to a five-level (four-year) apprenticeship program with the Carpenters’ union. There are limited spaces available in each program and we encourage those who may be interested to promptly apply.

    Qualified Candidate Requirements:

    • 17 years of age or older.
    • High school graduate or equivalent recognized by local school authorities.
    • Physically able to perform work (heavy lifting, heights, weather elements).
    • Reliable transportation to and from training.

    This is an informational session for parents and scholars who are interested in career paths in: Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, and Emergency Communications. The session will cover topics on: how to enroll, program expectations, and program timeline.     Job Shadow Day

    Almost 200 RCSD scholars participated in the 2nd Annual Job Shadow Day held on February 2nd, 2023! Prior to the event, scholars were surveyed as to their career interest and placed in an aligned job shadow location. Over 60 companies throughout Rochester hosted scholars. If you are a local company and/or organization interested in hosting a Job Shadow Day location for 2024, please contact Terri Woodard at terri.woodard@rcsdk12.org for more information.

    Job Shadowing provides high school students with an opportunity to explore career possibilities in a real-world environment. Students are provided with information about specific careers and will depart with knowledge and awareness that will be of value to them in their post-secondary decision-making. Shadowing helps students network with professionals, develop positive mentoring relationships, and understand the link between academics and the working world.

    Hosted by Maker Faire and NYSCATE, Friday, November 19th is Maker Faire Rochester's 3rd Annual Student S.T.E.A.M. Fest! It's a special sneak peak of Maker Faire Rochester for students in grades 3 to 8. The day is filled with hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, wonder & excitement centered around S.T.E.A.M. and every aspect of the Maker Movement. 

    •    Meet, interact, and converse with individual Makers who are sharing their unique passions
    •    Become exposed to the wide breadth of art, science, engineering, history, and interdisciplinary subject areas that all involve making
    •    Engage in hands-on workshops and activities, resulting in a project to take home
    •    Collaborate on a large community project and share experiences with other attendees
    •    Become exposed to, feel welcomed by, and supported in, the Maker community
    •    Be inspired with at least one new idea to try at home or in school

    Edison Culinary Caters Fredrick Douglas Greater Rochester International Airport Event

    Edison Café was asked to cater the dedication and statue unveiling event held on Friday, October 29th, 2022.  The event was attended by such VIPs as: the great, great, great granddaughter of Fredrick Douglas, the great, great, great, great grandson, Mayor Evans, the county executive, state senators, Garth Fagan and many more.

    2022 Women in Manufacturing Summit

    What an awesome event sponsored by the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program - the 2022 Women in Manufacturing Summit had nearly 70 people join in person and dozens more joined online. Everyone had the opportunity to network, have a yummy lunch, and most importantly hear from Ms. Brandilyn Steves of WEMOCO, Ms. Wendy Smith of Rebuild Optimation, and Ms. Vicky Moore of Hammer.

    Approximately 330 scholars from over 13 RCSD schools attended the first ROC With Your Hands event hosted by Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA).  Scholars and staff had a great time and learned about local career opportunities, area manufacturing and technology colleges, and participated in hands-on activities. 100% of scholars surveyed would attend this event again next year.
