As part of the New York State Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, students, teachers, non-teaching staff and parents are being asked to take part in School Climate Surveys. Rochester City School District is once again piloting this initiative in the 2018-2019 school year. The survey is scheduled to be administered from February 25th through April 5th. The survey is web-based and RCSD has developed a means to administer the survey to every school, collect survey responses and report back on all the data we gathered throughout the entire district.
With the guidance and support or the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the US Department of Education, the School Climate Survey is currently being piloted at several other school districts across New York. In the 2019-20 school year, this survey will be used to gather information for districts to calculate a School Climate Index and participation will be required. This index will be used to hold educational organizations accountable to school conditions for student learning. Data generated by the School Climate Index will help NYSED and RCSD to maximize all students’ learning, especially for traditionally marginalized youth through activities, policies, and strategies that reduce bullying, harassment, and the overuse of punitive and exclusionary responses to student misbehavior.
