Students Learn About Solar Eclipse from News 8 Meteorologist James Gilbert

(March 22, 2024) With excitement building around the solar eclipse happening on Monday, April 8, 2024, students at The Children’s School of Rochester No. 15 got a lesson from a local scientist in Rochester.

News 8 Meteorologist James Gilbert spoke to students in Jennifer Benton’s 5th-grade class on Friday, March 22, 2024, about the upcoming solar eclipse.

“I am extremely excited to see the eclipse,” said Gilbert.  “I have never seen one myself, I’ve heard stories of people bursting out in tears from seeing an eclipse, it’s a special moment.”

Mr. Gilbert explained to students what a meteorologist does, how we get weather, and how the weather is presented on television using a green screen.  He also talked about all kinds of weather including snow, ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, and rain.

Viewing of the eclipse will depend on the weather in Rochester that day.  If it is cloudy, the view of the total eclipse has the potential to be blocked.  If it is sunny, the view will be better, and safety measures must be followed to view this scientific marvel.  The Rochester Museum and Science Center has graciously donated a pair of eclipse glasses to all RCSD students
