(November 23, 2022) Students from several RCSD schools participated in a ROC2Change Student Summit with fellow students from across Monroe County on Tuesday, November 22, at St. John Fisher University. The theme for this particular summit was JUMP: Be Just, Be Unified, Be Mindful, Be Peaceful.
RCSD participants included students from Edison Career and Technology High School, East Upper School, Franklin Upper School, James Monroe Upper School, Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School Commencement Academy, Northeast College Preparatory High School, School of the Arts, and School Without Walls. Edison students co-hosted the summit along with peers from Webster Central Schools to address issues of racism.
Students participated in three break-out sessions on the following topics – Walk in My Shoes, End Racism: Start with the One in the Mirror, and Refine History: A Celebration of All of Us.
“I am proud of the partnerships forged in the ROC2Change Summit and the great collaboration that has resulted throughout the years,” said Dr. Carmine Peluso, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “This event has been the trailblazer in encouraging conversations of race and equity and also in making strides to effect change. Student voice is critical to this conversation.”
ROC2Change was established in 2016 as students from across Monroe County began to come together to address race relations. Hundreds of students from more than 30 schools have participated in the full-day summit in years past. These summits encourage dialogue about race through speakers, student-led activities, and sessions. Each summit also includes time for students to collaborate on how to bring the ROC2Change progress and plans back to their respective schools and communities.
