Students in Extended School Year Program Celebrate with Special Olympics
(July 27, 2022) Three-hundred students who are part of the Rochester City School District’s Extended School Year (ESY) program celebrated with the Special Olympics on Tuesday, July 26, at John Williams School No. 5. Special Olympics brought the West Irondequoit football team to volunteer and assist students who participated in basketball skills and carnival-type activities.
The day began with an opening ceremony and parade, followed by activities and a closing ceremony on the school’s baseball field.
“We know how much our kids look forward to this event and they have a wonderful time,” said Adam Roger, Principal of the ESY elementary program. “It really exemplifies what kind of students we have here, which are unbelievable kids.”
The District’s ESY program serves students in grades K – 6 and 9 – 12. It extends the school year for scholars who have 12-month Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), which support students in need of continuous engagement and learning.
