(November 12, 2019) The Rochester City School District is proud to announce that Chief of Schools Dr. Shirley JA Green received the Charles E. Banks Community Service Award at the annual Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Charles T. Lunsford Black and Gold Scholarship Gala on October 19, 2019.
The Charles E. Banks Community Service Award is given annually to a member of the Rochester community who demonstrates a commitment to service. Dr. Green was presented this award for her dedicated service to the Rochester City School District in her roles as Principal, Executive Director of Specialized Services, and Chief of Schools. Not only does she demonstrate service in her role at the District, but she also is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she has been an officer and chair of Membership Services and Delta Academy Delta Gems, working with young ladies in the Monroe County area. Dr. Green has also been the General Supervisor of the Mt. Vernon Young People’s Department for more than 25 years.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first African-American, intercollegiate Greek-lettered fraternity, founded December 4, 1906, at Cornell University. Its mission is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for the community. Eta Rho Lambda, the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, will be celebrating 60 years of service in the Greater Rochester community in 2020. The local chapter provides scholarships annually to students at the Urban League Black Scholars Awards banquet. One of the founding members of the local chapter has an RCSD school named in his honor, Dr. Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19.
Congratulations to Shirley on this well-deserved recognition.
