Students Start JUST LAW Program for 2019 - 20 School Year

JUST LAW

(October 8, 2019) County Court Judge Sam Valleriani and Livingston County Supreme and County Court Chief Clerk Jose Cruzado visited with students Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Dr. Louis A. Cerulli School No. 34 as part of the JUST LAW program.

The J.U.S.T. L.A.W. Program (Justice, Understanding, Societal Trust, Literacy, Attendance and Writing) aims to educate city youth on the U.S. legal system. This is a partnership between the RCSD, the New York State Unified Court System, the City of Rochester, and the Rochester Black Bar Association.

Judges from the local area visit RCSD schools and address 6th – 9th grade students about the differences between rules and law. Students will have an opportunity to submit an essay on the topic of “What Justice Means to Me.”

Superintendent Terry Dade said, “We are so excited with the success of this program, and we’ve extended it this year to include 9th grade students.  One of the District’s “three rocks” is unsurpassed collaboration.  This partnership is an example of that. We are working together as one family to help students in the RCSD better understand the law and our country’s legal system.  This program utilizes student voice which is essential in the classroom.”

Last year over 450 students entered the essay contest and 12 were selected as winners. The 12 winners were honored during a ceremony at the Hall of Justice in Downtown Rochester.
