World of Inquiry School No. 58 Students Soar to New Heights with Hot Air Balloon Experience

(January 23, 2024) World of Inquiry School No. 58 students had a thrilling educational experience when a hot air balloon made a special appearance inside the school gym.  The unique event gave students a hands-on lesson in the science and wonder of hot air flight.

This opportunity was made possible by the Rochester Education Foundation’s (REF) Smile Program, which supports PreK – 6 schools across the District. Created by local philanthropist Dave Beck, the Smile Program funds field trips and experiences that enrich education and put smiles on students’ faces.

During the event, students learned about the mechanics of hot air balloons, the science behind their flight, weather patterns, balloon operations, safety protocols, and much more. The experience began with inflating the hot air balloon inside the gym using fans. Once inflated, students were invited to explore the ballon’s construction and strength.

Next, students moved outdoors to watch the assembly of the balloon’s basket and burners, getting a close-up view of the equipment, drop lines, instruments, and other items in the basket.  When the balloon’s burners were ignited, the students experienced the powerful noise and energy firsthand.

“Most of the kids have never seen a hot air balloon in real life,” said Megan Comstock, an Assistant Principal at World of Inquiry School No. 58.  “They were so excited to see something that big in person and go inside it.  This is a unique opportunity, and it’s great to have community members coming into our schools to show this to our students.”

The hot air balloon will visit six more elementary schools in March and April.  By the end of the tour, more than 3,500 students will have had the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind learning opportunity, funded by REF’s Smile Program and REMAX Realty Group.

Founded in 2005, REF’s mission is to provide programs and resources to improve learning and success for all City of Rochester students through partnerships with educators, businesses, and the community. For more information, visit www.rochestereducation.org.
