(May 8, 2024) Students and parents from Francis Parker School No. 23 took the classroom into the community for National Bike to School Day on Wednesday morning.
Pedaling from two different starting points – the Rochester Museum and Science Center and Cobbs Hill Park, the ride ended at School No. 23 on Barrington Street with snacks. This event supports the District’s efforts to provide schools with expanded learning opportunities.
“The kids like being able to take over the street and bike in a big group,” said Adrian Martin, a parent of a student at School No. 23. “They can be in charge of getting themselves places and do not need to rely on their parents. Research says if you bike or walk to school, you score higher on tests because you are more awake and active, it’s good for the body and the brain.”
The first-ever National Bike to School Day occurred on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to bicycle or walk to school safely. The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, celebrated worldwide each October.
