(May 2, 2024) Five Rochester City School District students have been recognized with “Do the Right Thing” awards for their positive behavior, accomplishments, and good deeds. All five were honored at an awards ceremony on May 2, 2024, at the Rochester Police Department’s headquarters on Exchange Street.
Josiah Gonzalez, a 3rd-grade student at Roberto Clemente School No. 8, was nominated by his mother for his bravery during a medical emergency. In February, Josiah’s baby brother suffered two seizures. While nervous and scared, he put his feelings aside, talked to his sister, and calmed her down before an ambulance arrived.
Zaviona Radcliffe, a 10th-grade Rochester Early College International High School student, was nominated by the school’s social worker, Roberta McGill. Zaviona moved quickly when she saw another classmate suffering from a medical condition. She immediately called administrators, who notified the school’s medical staff.
Isaiah Rodriguez, a 12th-grade student at All City High, was nominated by his teacher, Michelle Saporito-Springer, for being a leader and role model. He participates in the school’s student government and has worked with other students and his advisor to implement school spirit weeks and Black History Month activities.
Kail’an Townsend, a 4th-grade student at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy School No. 10, was nominated by her teacher, Kenisha Campell, for acting as a role model during an incident at school. Kail’an showed leadership when intervening during an altercation. She went to find an adult who could address the situation.
Dayquan Wynne, a 5th-grade student at John James Audubon School No. 33, was nominated by his teacher, Erin Sperry, for being a leader. A classmate's grandmother was concerned about her grandson, who would not discuss what was bothering him at school. The only reason why the grandmother knew anything about it was because Dayquan spoke up at football practice and told the child’s father.
The goal of the “Do the Right Thing” program is to foster positive relationships between the Rochester Police Department and community youth. The program rewards students who strive to make good choices, do well in school, give back to their communities, or demonstrate a turnaround or improved behavior.
