Ida B. Wells-Barnett Elementary School No. 34 Teacher Receives Golden Apple Award
(April 8, 2025) The Rochester City School District proudly congratulates Jennifer Blanchard, a first-grade teacher at Ida B. Wells-Barnett Elementary School No. 34, on receiving the Golden Apple Award from News 8.
Ms. Blanchard was nominated by her colleague, Kerry Zito, for her dedication to student growth through the “Roar Store” rewards system. The store allows students to “purchase” games, snacks, and prizes, items Ms. Blanchard secures through community donations. The Roar Store supports students who are Respectful, Own their behavior, Always do their best, and are Responsible (ROAR).
“Her commitment to students is exceptional,” said Ms. Zito. “She works with our community to stock the Roar Store. Social-emotional learning is a huge component of what we do at our school, that is, the motivation, and the kids buy into it.”
“Ms. Blanchard is an awesome first-grade teacher who loves her students,” said Akilah Collins, School No. 34’s Principal. “She goes above and beyond to support them in any way she can. We love her because she is selfless, always making sure kids get things that bring them joy.”
Ms. Blanchard, now in her 17th year of teaching, says she has always felt that teaching comes naturally to her, and she truly cannot imagine doing anything else. For her, the most rewarding part of the job is the students. “When a child says, ‘I love you,’ or ‘you are my favorite teacher,’ it is those moments, seeing the growth with a student who could not do something at the beginning of the year, and suddenly it clicks.”
The District celebrates Ms. Blanchard’s well-deserved recognition and thanks her for her dedication to students. Congratulations, Ms. Blanchard.
