Hot Air Balloon Ignites Curiosity in Students at School No. 33
(March 26, 2025) Students at John James Audubon School No. 33 recently had an unforgettable learning experience when a hot air balloon visited their gymnasium. The event provided a hands-on dive into the science and excitement of hot air flight.
This unique opportunity was made possible by the Rochester Education Foundation’s Smile Program, which supports educational experiences for PreK – 6 schools across the District. Created by local philanthropist Dave Beck, the program funds memorable field trips and activities designed to enhance learning and bring joy to students.
Throughout the day, students delved into the mechanics of hot air balloons, learning about the principles of flight, weather patterns, safety measures, and how the balloon operates. The experience kicked off with the balloon being inflated inside the gym using fans, allowing students to examine its construction and durability up close.
The excitement continued outdoors, where students observed the assembly of the balloon’s basket and burners. They looked closely at equipment, including drop lines and instruments. When the balloon’s burners were ignited, students experienced the impressive noise and power that drives the flight.
"Our students are engaged in events every month here at School No. 33, and I have to say, this is the most excited they have been,” said Lisa Garrow, the school’s principal. “These topics are integrated into our New York State curriculum, so when you bring in something tangible for them to experience, something they might not otherwise have access to, it sparks their curiosity and encourages them to explore the content area even more."
The hot air balloon has visited several elementary schools this year. By the end of its tour, more than 3,500 students will have had the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind learning opportunity, funded by REF’s Smile Program and REMAX Realty Group.
Founded in 2005, REF’s mission is to provide programs and resources to improve learning and success for all City of Rochester students through partnerships with educators, businesses, and the community. For more information, visit www.rochestereducation.org.
