RCSD Students Benefit from Weekend of Hope HBCU Football Classic
(September 23, 2024) Rochester City School District students had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) surrounding this past Saturday, September 21, as there was an exhibition football game featuring the Central State University (CSU) Marauders and the Albany State Rams at the Rochester Community Sports Complex.
Leading up to the game, a select number of students participated in an enlightening HBCU experience at the Riverside Convention Center on Thursday, September 19. This event allowed them to explore various career pathways in trade and gain insights into the enriching college experience that HBCUs provide.
The excitement continued Friday when students from several RCSD schools attended spirited performances by the CSU and Albany State marching bands. Additionally, football teams held practice sessions, including one at James Monroe Upper School and another at East High School.
“It gives us a first-person perspective of what it takes to be a college athlete,” said Anthony Davis, a senior and the starting center on Monroe’s football team. “I want to play football at the next level, and I can watch the people play my position and see what they put themselves through to raise the standards to that level.”
The Albany State Rams from Georgia defeated the CSU Marauders from Ohio by a score of 28 -7.
