Students Honor Former RCSD Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics at Annual Track Meet

(June 6, 2024) More than 1,000 students from the Rochester City School District have honored one of the nation’s top athletic directors during two days of track events on Thursday, May 18, and Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Elementary students across the District competed at the annual Nick Zona track meet at East Upper School and Northeast College Preparatory High School.  Students participated in the long jump, high jump, 200m run, 4 x 100 relay, 50m dash, and softball throws.

“We need to celebrate kids more and what they can achieve when they put their minds to it,” said Chris Corey, Director of Physical Education and Health for the Rochester City School District.  “We want to expose our students to anything that will keep them active.  Nick was a proponent of getting our kids involved in track and field, and to see them out here competing is a lot of fun and rewarding.”

For over 40 years, students and staff have honored Nick Zona, the former RCSD Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics as well as Section V President, during this annual track meet.  Zona, renowned as one of the area’s top football coaches and recognized nationally as a leading athletics director, dedicated his career to supporting athletes.  He served as Section V president from 1962-65.
