VISUAL ARTS AT SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
The School of the Arts Visual Arts Department provides students with opportunities to master a variety of approaches to personal expression using two, three- and four-dimensional media. School of the Arts believes that the fine arts are essential to the growth and development of the whole child. Students learn critical thinking, problem solving, and creative expression. Arts helps children develop self-confidence and self-discipline; it opens pathways to learning for all subjects. Skill-building and individual artistic growth are pursued through the study of various art forms including: drawing, painting, photography, computer art, and sculpture. The study of art history provides an understanding of how artists contribute to the development of world culture.
The Grade 7 and 8 Visual Arts program is exploratory. Students participate in experiences using different media, with a concentration on the elements and principles of art and design. In Grades 9 and 10, Visual Arts students are enrolled in the Studio in Foundations of Art course with components in drawing, painting, media, art history, and three-dimensional design. Students in Grades 11 and 12 focus on areas of interest and take a rotation of courses in drawing and painting, photography, three-dimensional design, and media.
