🎭 SOTA Auditions – Frequently Asked Questions
Can I audition for more than one major?
No. Each applicant must choose one major to focus on. With 500–600 applications each year, it isn’t possible to schedule multiple auditions per student. We believe students are more successful when they commit to the major they are most passionate about.
How many students are accepted each year?
SOTA accepts about 200 new students each year, or roughly 20 students per major. This means about 1 in 5 applicants will be offered a seat. Because space is limited, families should also complete the RCSD Schools of Choice Booklet to secure placement at another school if not accepted into SOTA.
Can I audition again next year if I don’t get accepted?
Yes. Students may audition every year.
-
Most seats open at the 7th grade level.
-
For students applying beyond grade 7, acceptance depends on both a successful audition and seat availability in the specific grade and major.
What does the audition consist of?
The audition is a simulated SOTA experience lasting about three hours. Students will:
-
Participate in classes and/or rehearsals.
-
Complete group and individual work in their chosen discipline.
-
Take part in an interview or performance to demonstrate their artistic ability.
It is as much an audition of SOTA for your child as it is of your child for SOTA.
What do you look for in the audition?
We look for a balance of talent and potential. The three-hour audition gives students the chance to show both artistic skill and the ability to learn in a group and individual setting.

Do academics, behavior, or attendance factor into acceptance?
No. Acceptance is based solely on artistic ability demonstrated at the audition.
Do you expect all students to pursue a career in the arts?
No. Only about 25–30% of graduates pursue arts careers. Our goal is a well-rounded education with an emphasis on the arts. All students graduate with a deeper appreciation of the arts, no matter what path they take.
Do siblings of current SOTA students get preference?
Not automatically. The only possible exception is in the case of a tiebreaker, when other factors such as essays, recommendations, and portfolios may also be considered.
If accepted into one major, can I try others?
Yes, especially in Middle School (grades 7–8):
-
All students rotate through 10-week exploratory arts classes.
-
Music ensembles are open to all.
-
Plays and musicals are open to any student by audition.
In High School (grades 9–12):
-
Students remain in their chosen major.
-
Electives in other arts are available, especially in junior and senior years.
How does SOTA compare academically?
-
SOTA students meet the same academic standards as all RCSD schools.
-
We offer a full range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
-
Our high graduation rate reflects strong academics in addition to our arts programs.
-
Charter schools follow different guidelines, so comparisons are not exact.
