•  Creative Grammar and Style/Writing for Self-discovery

    This course will serve as an introduction to the basic grammatical rules of standard written English through the use of writing exercises and creative activities. Students will review basic grammar and move on to more advanced stylistic concerns essential to creative writers in all genres. 2nd semester--writing for self-discovery

    Craft of Writing--10th grade

    This course emphasizes understanding the characteristics and techniques in the literary genres of fiction, poetry, and dramatic writing.  This course will continue to build on students’ reading and writing skills begun in Grammar & Style, Writing for Publication and Self Discovery & Performance Word and Text (9th grade).  Readings of works by major writers will be read and examined as inspiration and models of fine writing. Students will keep a portfolio of their writing progress, a writing journal, and participate in writing workshops. 

     

    Contemporary Writers -11th grade

    Contemporary Writers: This is a literature course designed for writing students to read works by numerous noted and award-winning contemporary authors. Reading selections cover a variety of writing genres.  These works will serve as a source of style and technique from which students can model their own writing and inspire student work in terms of themes and contemporary issues.

     

    Advanced Poetry/Fiction Workshop--12th grade

     This semester course is for senior Creative Writing students interested in studying the art of poetry and writing original poetry. An open mind and supportive attitude will be essential as we workshop each other’s poems. We will be exploring several approaches to the art of writing poetry through a variety of different exercises to generate poems in open and closed forms. The second semester will focus on the art of fiction and will offer a study of fiction writers and provide a workshop for the original stories of students.

     

    Creative Writing 7

    This is a 10 week course designed to provide an "arts exploratory" experience to 7th graders at School of the Arts who will be majoring in visual arts, music, drama, dance, and creative writing at the school with a four-year program from grades 9-12. The primary purpose of this course is to explore the literary arts in relation to other art forms--from story to other creative expressions--utilizing interdisciplinary projects designed to connect writing to adaptations in other mediums. The course will serve as an introduction to the elements of art forms and aesthetic principles of design that are common language among the arts.
