COURSE DESCRIPTION
The mission of physical education is to enable all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy productive and fulfilling life in a global environment.
The discipline of physical education is fundamental to the development and education of each individual. Physical education provides a unique opportunity to develop concepts, skills and attitudes that reinforce personal wellness and the ability to manage one’s life. The discipline further prepares students for the roles and responsibilities of adulthood.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION MEANS THAT THE LEARNER’S INDIVIDUAL NEEDS COGNITIVE, AFFECTIVE, AND PSYCHOMOTOR ARE SATISFIED EXPLICITLY THROUGH ALL FORMS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
Every student is required to earn 2 total credits of Physical Education in order to graduate from high school. Students are normally scheduled for .5 credits every school year unless they need more.
The units of instruction for this school year were decided on by each individual class. Two units are mandatory for all classes: Swimming and fitness testing. Each unit usually lasts 2- 4 weeks. An entire school year typically covers at least 9 or more units.
The following are examples of what the students will be participating in: badminton, basketball, bowling, boxing, cooperative games, dance, handball, flag football, floor hockey, fitness activities, group exercise class, gymnastics, lacrosse, orienteering, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, yoga, weightlifting.
These activities may be changed due to weather constraints. The 7th and 8th grade programs will be involved in the same activities, but with modifications and more emphasis on skill acquisition at their grade level.
Students will be required to take quizzes, and finals based on the rules and knowledge of the units of instruction.
