Quality Transition in the IEP
The IEP is the cornerstone of the special education process for each individual student. It is the tool to document how one student’s special needs related to his/her disability will be met within the context of an educational environment. Within the IEP document there are sections dedicated to the student's transition and transition planning.
Transition planning is a process to help students with a disability decide what they want to do after high school. It also helps them figure out how to get there. The purpose is to help students connect their interest, abilities, and future goals to their desired outcomes of being independent young adults.
Transition planning and Transition in the IEP is more than just a hopeful exercise or brainstorming session. Instead, it contains student voice and documentation throughout the IEP.
