Fine Motor Home Activities
- Play doh
- Roll it, squeeze it, make balls, “snakes”, letters, numbers and shapes. Write letters, numbers and shapes on paper and have your child “trace “it with rolled out play dough.
- Use scissors to cut play doh (great for strengthening fingers).
- There are many play doh and slime recipes online.
- “Hide” beads, pennies, etc. in play doh to. Have your child find the “hidden treasures”.
- Paint
- Use the following items to paint with: paint brushes, Q-tips, cotton balls, cut sponges into small pieces, stamps, or finger paint.

- Shaving Cream
- Put shaving cream on mirrors (in the bathroom) or on walls in the bathtub. Use fingers or paint brushes to make letters, numbers, shapes.
- Scissors
- As mentioned before...cut out shapes in play dough; use a variety of papers.. thicker paper, bubble wrap, tissue paper, etc.
- Tear papers into small pieces and roll into a ball, then glue on paper, tracing letters, numbers, shapes, etc.
- Dot to dot worksheets: can create your own designs. Use numbers 1,2,3 or letters, a,b,c to connect dots in order to make design.
- Mazes and word searches are always fun and you can create your own
- Memory games with letters numbers, shapes and colors:
- Cut paper into any shape and make 2 of each letter, number, etc. Place face down and have kids try to find the match.
- Use a deck of cards to sort by “suit”, color, number.
- String beads!!!
- Use string, shoe laces, pipe cleaners, dry spaghetti noodles, etc.
- You can string beads, buttons, dry pasta, etc.
- Use an empty squeeze bottle or cleaned medicine dropper
- Fill the bottle with water and have your child squeeze the water into an ice cube tray, cup or squeeze water from the bottle into the sink, etc. You can also have your child soak a sponge in a bowl of water and then squeeze the water from the sponge to another bowl.
- Use an empty egg carton
- Your child can sort items in each area. For example, they can place 3 beads in each
section for fine motor and counting skills; have a bowl of beads or colored pom poms and ask your child to only place the “orange” ones in the egg carton. So many ways to
be creative!

- Practice tying shoelaces
- Start by coloring one half of a long lace a different color (You can use sharpie markers).
- Break the task down and repeat until mastered.
- Example: start by having your child cross the laces to make an “X”. Repeat this until mastered and then move on to the next step.
