(1) How can we support Latino Students?
Mathematics has developed within many cultures. The number systems have varied along with the culture. Ethnomathematics is the way in which cultures classify, order, count, measure, and mathematize their environment. Teaching re-Columbian mathematics can instill pride in Chicano students as they learn about their culture and how mathematical understanding developed within that culture. The Mesoamerican (from northern-central Mexico to northern Costa Rica) number system was important in commerce, historical events, and the development of Mesoamerica. The Mesoamerican number system is a vigesimal, or base-20) system.
