Welcome to the First Grade Page!
The first grade skill strand begins with a review of consonant and short vowel sound students learned in Kindergarten. From there, students are taught vowel digraphs, the "magic -e" and are introduced to -r controlled vowels. Students are also introduced to spelling alternatives for consonants and long vowel sounds. Grammar lessons focus on quotation marks, nouns, verbs (including past, present, and future tenses), contractions, adjectives, conjunctions, pronouns, and prepositions. First graders will also engage in the writing process (planning, drafting, revising/editing, and publishing) beginning in Unit 3. Students will create pieces in the fictional narrative, descriptive paragraph, opinion, and instructional writing genres. The Listening and Learning strand continues to provide opportunities for students to hear stories read aloud while building content area knowledge.
