    Hello Anna Murray-Douglas family!

I am so happy to join your team as the Assistant Principal for 7th and 8th grade. Until I get the opportunity to meet you in person, here’s a little about me and how I came to be a part of this school.

I began my love of school and education in Kindergarten as an English Language Learner in the Rochester City School District. Throughout my years as an educator, I keep coming back to the many ways in which my life and career continue to benefit from the rich and diverse experiences I had during my bilingual education in RCSD schools.

After graduating from School of the Arts, I began my studies at New York University, receiving a BA in English Literature and Spanish Language and Culture, an MS in Education and Human Development and in Second-Language Acquisition and Literacy from the University of Rochester, and finally an Educational Leadership C.A.S. from SUNY Brockport. These studies in languages and cultures have allowed me to travel a great deal, discovering how literacy and telling our own stories empowers us and helps us be confident of our own identities.

Prior to coming back to the RCSD, I was able to apply these discoveries to my role as Director of Foreign Languages and ENL at East Irondequoit Central School District. While there, we were able to increase scores and passing rates for the NYS Foreign Language Proficiency Exam, as well as design and write curriculum for Spanish, French and Italian programs, grades 3-12.

Most recently serving at Wilson Magnet High School, I worked with educators from across the district to design rigorous, uniform, and culturally responsive literacy curriculum for all district ELA, SLA, and ENL classrooms. At Wilson, we welcomed our first cohort of bilingual scholars and created curriculum and supports for new approaches to learning. We also had our first cohorts of students earning the NYS Seal of Biliteracy, honoring the many languages our scholars represent.

I am truly honored to be a part of the legacy of School #12 and the Anna Murray-Douglas Academy. I look forward to supporting all that you have built and to loudly celebrating our scholars’ achievements and dreams!

Wishing us all a wonderful year,

    Alicia Fonseca
