Altrusa International
Altrusa International's Rochester Chapter has provided the RIA library with wonderful support. They have donated thousands of great quality used books for our RIA library, classroom libraries and our student's home libraries. Altrusa members have volunteered to assist our students in the classroom and Ms. Wise in the library. RIA library is so thankful for their many gifts of books and volunteer assistance.
We also received many books from an Altrusa International grant. We invited Altrusa members to RIA to share the new books they purchased with our RIA teachers and students. What better way to share books with students than to read them aloud?Take a look at our video to enjoy our book reception!Rochester Education FoundationThe Rochester Education Foundation (REF) secured a grant and purchased nearly 100 new bilingual books in our students' first languages and English. These are some of the most popular books in the library. Students often sit in groups during lunch gathered around a student who is literate in the students' first language as he or she reads a book aloud. Did you know Swahili and Somali use the English alphabet? It is a very touching moment whenever a new English reader discovers she can now read the bilingual books in her first language too. Without these valuable books, our students might not have made this important discovery.
