Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Melendez
Service: I have been a PE teacher for 30 years, 24 with RCSD.
Education: I attained my bachelor's degree in physical education from Hunter College City University of New York and my masters degree in physical education from Brooklyn College City University of New York.
Advanced certification/honors: In 2006 I achieved National Board Certification in early and middle childhood physical education. I was one of only 12 PE teachers in New York State at the time I achieved this certification to have it.
I achieved my Shodan (first degree black belt) in Hattatsu Ryu Karate on June 2011.
Personal: I have been married for 22 years. My wife (who is also a RCSD teacher) and I have two children, a daughter age 20 and a son age 17. My daughter is a talented lacrosse player who plays college lacrosse and my son is a talented baseball player who plays for his school and on a club team.
I played both lacrosse and ice hockey collegiately. I enjoy exercise, reading, movies, trips to Disney, watching my kids play sports and spending time with my family and friends.
PE philosophy: I believe all children should be active and enjoy play. It is my goal to prepare children to be healthy, responsible adults and to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment in the gym free of teasing, bullying, judging or unsafe behavior. My program offers a well-rounded variety of age-appropriate skill experiences to enhance learning and enjoyment of physical activity.
