Welcome to First Grade
Hello, My name is Mrs. Devlin. I am going to be your teacher for first grade. I am really looking forward to the first day of school. Are you as excited as I am? I am sending you this letter to let you know some of the things you can do to get ready for first grade.
Although summer is a time to relax and have fun, don’t forget to learn!
· Remember to practice your letters and sounds. You should be able to name all of the letters of the alphabet and say their sounds. Even when they are mixed up! You should be able to write all upper and lower case letters on your own. Knowing your letters and sounds are important as we will use them to learn to read!
· Practice writing your first and last name. Make sure you are using capital letters where they are supposed to be and the rest are lower case.
· Practice counting objects and writing numbers.
· Practice these sight words. You should be able to read them fast without sounding them out: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it. When you get really good at these try this set: he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I.
We will have recess outside everyday in first grade so please wear sneakers. Students will need boots, hats and gloves for winter play daily.
Our first grade supply list is included with this letter. All students will be asked to keep school supplies at school and not bring them back and forth from home as they frequently get forgotten or lost.
The main supplies your child will need at home for daily homework will be pencils and crayons. Students will be responsible for bringing a homework folder back and forth daily. Please check it daily for papers.
I can’t wait to see you in the fall. We are going to have an exciting year together and we will learn many wonderful things.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Devlin (Room #104)
