• Course Overview

OACES Culinary Careers is an adult vocational job preparation program designed to prepare for and place students in foodservice employment.  The purpose of this course is to develop students into successful graduates who have acquired the soft skills and culinary skills to achieve in the workplace.

The program prepares students for employment by using four sections of instruction.  First, weekly chapter assignments and testing from the textbook.  Second, weekly professional assignments resulting in a realistic, practical employment portfolio.  Third, practical application of cooking techniques and kitchen fundamentals through the operation of the student run Hart Street Café. Lastly, weekly training in either TASC Exam preparation (High School Equivalency) or ESOL (English as a second language) instruction.

The course will enable students to reach goals by applying various milestones of achievement through a certification program.  The course offers a Level 2 ServeSafe certification, a Red Cross Adult and Infant First Aid/CPR and AED certification, access to the nationally recognized Rouxbe On Line Culinary School which offers 12 certifications, and the OACES Level 1 and 2 certifications in which students can earn up to 47 different instructor signed competencies.

Upon completion or near completion of the program, employment placement is available through the instructor on a merit based philosophy.  Deserving students will be placed with an employer if they have completed the requirements of the course, are drug free, and have reasonable availability to work.
