• Year One with Mr. Skinner

Students with Mr. Skinner are placed into courses based on acquisition of English language levels. These levels help to ascertain the depth of which the NYS science curriculum is appropriate for our students.

All students will experience what it is to behave as a scientist.  This means that students will participate in investigations that help support their understanding of science and the skills necessary to be a scientist.

Topics that will be covered this year are:

Topic 1.  Science and Engineering Practices
This unit will include measurement and tools of science, including microscopy, basic experimental design, data collection and organization, and data analysis.  This unit includes vocabulary and skills sets that will be used throughout the year.

    Topic 2.  Characterisitcs of Life
This unit will focus on the differences between living and non-living things and how to identify if an unknown specimen is alive or not.

Topic 3.  Classification of Living Things
In this unit, students will focus on the characteristics of life that are different between the 3 domains and then the subclassifications of plants and animal diversity.

    Topic 4.  Human Body Systems
Finally, students will take a closer look at organization of animals, specifically humans.

The depth at which the content is covered will be based on the level of the student and the rate at which they reach mastery of each topic covered.
