About SEL Day
-
RCSD aims to increase social-emotional learning to break down barriers that may impede our student’s academic and overall success. On October 25, please spend time with scholars and staff to build community, cultivate relationships, and make authentic partnerships. Our hope as a district is that we continue to intentionally incorporate SEL into our daily practices to make tremendous gains for our students, school climate, culture, and community.
The SEL Day theme for October 25 is 'Activating Dreams'. There are grade and age-appropriate activities below to initiate with your scholars the morning of October 25th and fellow staff in the afternoon as we continue to build One RCSD!

On Friday, October 25, our District will participate in a building-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) DAY by creating and building routines, rituals, and relationships to our theme: Activate Dreams. Scholars will participate in SEL activities in the morning and fellow staff in the afternoon. Make your commitment today to showcase SEL in your community, promote SEL to your personal and professional networks, advocate SEL with your local policymakers, and support SEL in your local schools, organizations, and community.
Along with themed and general SEL activities on this site, here are some strategies to support this effort and our theme of 'Activating Dreams' for October 25:1. Create a Safe Space
- Establish Trust: Build a classroom environment where students feel safe and valued. Show consistent support and openness.
- Set Ground Rules: Develop and agree on classroom rules about respect, listening, and confidentiality to foster a sense of community.
2. Integrate SEL into the Curriculum
- Emotional Check-Ins: Begin each day or week with a brief emotional check-in using tools like feelings charts or sharing circles.
- SEL Lessons: Include lessons on recognizing and managing emotions, empathy, and building positive relationships. Utilize available SEL programs and resources.
3. Foster Emotional Expression
- Journaling: Encourage students to keep journals for personal reflection and emotional expression.
- Art and Music: Use creative activities as outlets for students to process and express their emotions.
4. Provide Support Resources
- Counseling Services: Inform students and families about available counseling and mental health resources. Collaborate with school counselors for additional support.
