On Wednesday, September 3, the Rochester City School District will open its doors to welcome more than 30,000 students in grades
Pre-K through 12 to the 2014-15 school year. Story opportunities include the following.

95% Attendance Challenge/Volunteer Drivers Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Central Office
· Dr. Vargas set a District goal of reaching 95 percent attendance on the first day of school as attendance is a critical first step toward boosting student achievement. The District has recruited community volunteers to give rides to elementary school children who qualify for free “yellow bus” transportation until their bus schedules are complete. Media are invited to Central Office at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday when Dr. Vargas will be returning from dropping off a student and a second set of drivers will be meeting to drive another student to school. Media can follow this pair of drivers to school.
Five New Expanded-Learning Schools/Call Chip Partner or Laurie Buckley to schedule a visit
· This school year there are a total of 10 expanded-learning schools in the District, an increase from five last year (see additions in blue on chart). Expanded-learning schools provide an additional 300 hours of instruction time and support. New York State assessment data shows that five out of five expanded-learning schools increased proficiency scores in English Language Arts while four out of five improved in math.

CyberLounges/Chromebooks for Every Student/Call Chip Partner or Laurie Buckley to schedule a visit
· The District is beginning a 1:1 program this school year at Rochester Early College International High School and Integrated
Arts and Technology High School, where a Chromebook will be provided to every student. The schools are offering blended learning courses, meaning the students will use their Chromebooks to access the online course material. Both schools share newly-renovated “cyberlounges” with colorful open spaces, comfortable work areas, Smart Boards, and other technology to support group and individual learning. Students from these schools worked as interns with District technology staff all summer to help support their classmates with Student Run Help Desks, many of them interested in pursuing a technology career after graduation.
