Rochester Police Department Donation to RCSD Robotics Team
(January 26, 2023) Rochester City School District students are getting a technology lesson thanks to the generosity of the Rochester Police Department. Students who are members of the ROC City Robotix Team are learning from a retired bomb squad robot that was gifted to members of TEAM 3838, a District-wide robotics team that consists of scholars from East High School, School Without Walls, School of the Arts, and Edison Career and Technology High School.
In addition to students being able to examine the robot’s design, this robot can also be showcased in demonstrations and used to attract future team members.
“Trying to learn how to move it around and getting to know what parts they use to make it is very interesting,” said Shia Torres, a 10th grade student at School Without Walls.
“To think about all the lives the robot saved, is really something,” said Ky’Christopher Sim-Johnson, an 11th grade student at Edison Career and Technology High School. “Learning to see what technology was like back then, and see how it has evolved and what we can do to improve it is exciting.”
Students from Team 3838 are exposed to science and technology by designing and building robots around a specific function to compete on a world stage against other teams. Adult team mentors are experts in various fields who guide and teach students along the way.
