Stefan Cohen and Kyle Crandall Renew National Board Certification
January 26, 2018—The Rochester City School District is pleased to announce that Stefan Cohen and Kyle Crandall have achieved National Board Re-Certification, announced by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards earlier this month. They join the growing community of National Board-Certified Teachers (NBCTs), now more than 118,000 educators across all 50 states, with more than 1,900 in New York State.
Mr. Cohen and Mr. Crandall have earned the profession’s highest mark of achievement through a rigorous, performance-based, peer-review process, demonstrating their impact on student learning and achievement. The District congratulates them both on this esteemed honor and recognition, as they proudly represent the Rochester City School District.
Stefan Cohen has been a social studies teacher in the RCSD since 1990, including 18 years at School of the Arts (SOTA). He is in his fourth year as Director of the Career in Teaching (CIT) program, a nationally recognized District-union collaboration providing Lead Teacher Mentor support to all new “Intern” teachers. From 2009 to 2013, Mr. Cohen worked with teachers across the District as a Lead Teacher for social studies under the federal Teaching American History (TAH) grant, promoting historical thinking and deeper understanding of history content. At SOTA, he served as the Team Leader of the Social Studies Department, an RTA Building Rep, a member of the School-based Planning Team, and on numerous District and union committees. Mr. Cohen is an occasionally active member of Rochester’s theatre community, and the proud parent of two RCSD students.
Kyle Crandall has served Rochester students for 20 years now, beginning his career in the RCSD as a special education teacher at Clara Barton School No. 2. In 2001, he began teaching mathematics at East High School, where he currently works as the Registrar. Mr. Crandall has taken on several leadership positions, including being a Lead Teacher/Mentor, training new mentors in the District, and serving as an RTA Representative at East. He is currently in his 5th season as the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Northeast Douglass and is entering his 17th season as the Varsity Baseball Coach at East. Mr. Crandall is also very active in the Beechwood Neighborhood and his church, which is Bethel Christian Fellowship.
