Rochester Welcomes More Than 500 Students at 4th Student Summit on Race
March 31, 2017—Today students from the Rochester City School District led students through thought-provoking discussions and activities at the ROC2CHANGE Student Summit on Race. Thanks to a generous donation of space from Wegmans, it was the largest Student Summit to date, with over 500 students in attendance from several districts in Monroe County gathered at the Wegmans Conference Center.
The day began with a welcome from Rochester Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams and an introduction video you can watch here, followed by opening remarks from Board President White and West Irondequoit Superintendent Jeffrey Crane. Students then participated with “homework” from the previous Student Summit on Race, a privilege walk, breakout group discussions and performances from the Rochester Teen Empowerment group.
This is the fourth student summit held since January 2016. Each summit is planned, organized and executed by the students, with support from teachers and staff. The next student summit will be hosted by the Brockport Central School District on November 17, 2017 at the College at Brockport.
