Monroe’s Messiah Hampton Commits to Play Football at the University of Oregon

(June 13, 2025) James Monroe High School junior Messiah Hampton has officially committed to play Division I college football at the University of Oregon. Surrounded by family, teammates, and staff on the school’s football field Friday afternoon, Messiah signed his National Letter of Intent after receiving offers from top programs nationwide.

A standout both academically and athletically, Messiah has emerged as one of the region’s most highly regarded student-athletes. He was named to the 2024 All-Greater Rochester Fall Team after scoring 21 touchdowns and demonstrating his versatility at wide receiver, running back, safety, and as a return specialist.

“I just want young kids to see, if I can do it, you can do it,” Messiah said. “I am from Silver, Brown, and Genesee Streets, that area of the city. Everything you have gone through, so have I. It is easy to follow the wrong crowd. I want to go to the NFL. I want to do something better for my family and my community.”

Messiah is part of Monroe’s SMART Athletes Program, which helps student-athletes meet NCAA eligibility requirements while preparing them academically and personally for college. Students in the program take courses in public speaking, living environment, driver’s education, and Algebra I, and are supported in connecting their academic growth with their athletic goals.

Earlier this year, Messiah was one of just 32 high school athletes selected nationwide to participate in the Nike “The Next Ones” Athlete Invitational. Representing the Buffalo Bills, he traveled to New Orleans during Super Bowl week to compete in a national skills challenge and participate in behind-the-scenes NFL experiences.

Friday’s event also recognized three additional Monroe student-athletes who signed letters of intent to continue their athletic and academic careers:

  • Nasir Kelly – Football, Utica College
  • Anthony Davis – Football, SUNY Morrisville
  • Camaron Miller – Basketball, Keuka College

These students exemplify the commitment, focus, and determination found throughout the Monroe community. Their success highlights the role of talent and support from their families, coaches, and educators.
