Willa Powell was first elected to the Board of Education in 1997 and served a four-year term, after an 18 month hiatus she was appointed to a vacancy on the Board, and was elected to that seat in 2003, and reelected in 2007. As a Board member, she advanced policies strengthening parent involvement in the District and ensuring equitable school choice for all parents and students. She has long been an advocate for strong leadership in Rochester schools, accountability for performance, and support for student achievement.
Mrs. Powell is a retired Captain and Personnel Officer with the United States Army Reserves, which she joined in 1983. She earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology.
She and her husband, Donald, have three daughters: Anna, Margaret, and Abigail, and one son, Alexander. Anna attended NRCS and School of the Arts and earned a BA at RIT. Margaret graduated from School of the Arts and currently attends RIT, Abigail attends East High School, and Alexander attends School 23.
Commissioner Powell is a PTO member at School 23 and School of the Arts, and has served as a PTSA officer at NRCS and as a representative to the District Parent Council. She is a member of Metro-Justice, NYPIRG and the International Cesarean Awareness Network. Commissioner Powell also serves as the President of the national organization Citizens for Midwifery, President of Rochester Area Birth Network, Vice President of the Rochester Chapter of NOW, and serves on the Finance Committee of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference. She is also a member of Covenant United Methodist, and a former member and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church. |
