School of the Arts Student Murals to Live in New Spectrum Headquarters

Students from the School of the Arts (SOTA) were recently named winners of a regional mural contest hosted by Spectrum. The company challenged SOTA students to create original artwork centered on the theme of "connectivity." The winning designs will be displayed at Spectrum’s new Northeast regional headquarters in Henrietta, transforming the facility’s large-scale wall space into a gallery of student work.

The initiative was designed to integrate local student perspectives into the professional environment of Spectrum’s new regional hub. According to company representatives, the goal was to inspire employees by showcasing how local youth interpret the technology and services Spectrum provides to the community. After reviewing the submissions, Spectrum commissioned all entries and provided financial awards to every student.

The artwork will be installed digitally throughout the Henrietta building. This process involves taking the students’ original designs and converting them into large-format prints and architectural applications suitable for permanent display on the interior walls. Four students received higher-tier Commissioned Artist Awards for pieces selected for the building’s most visible and prominent locations.

The top honorees include Tri Minh Au, who received the $2,250 Main Mural Award for "An Evening Connected," a piece depicting a rooftop gathering. Harley Bermudez ($1,000), Gemma Delella ($1,000), and Daniela Manivong (SOTA grad) ($1,000) also received top commissions for their interpretations of how connectivity supports local communities and creates a sense of home.

Other student winners received awards ranging from $250 to $500 for their unique contributions. These submissions included Xpytial Conner’s display of Rochester landmarks, Lucy Everson’s work on broadband expansion, and Cheyla Morejon Martinez’s depiction of internet infrastructure. Additional winners included Nellie Griepsma, Navieyana Ofray, Vision Smith, and Shandise Smith Simms, with themes ranging from satellite connectivity to localized community service.

By participating in this commission, SOTA students gained experience in professional art submission and commercial installation. The project will stand as a long-term showcase of student talent within one of the region’s newest corporate facilities.
