More than 500 Extended School Year Students Participate in Special Olympics Celebration at Mary McLeod Bethune School No. 45

On Thursday, July 30, more than 500 students from the Rochester City School District’s Extended School Year (ESY) program participated in a Special Olympics celebration hosted at Mary McLeod Bethune School No. 45.

The event, held in partnership with Special Olympics New York, included a student-led parade, sports activities, and carnival-style games. Students from across the District came together for the celebration, which focused on inclusion, participation, and support for students with exceptionalities.

The ESY program serves PreK–12 students with 12-month Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) who benefit from continued academic and social engagement throughout the summer.

“This is not just a sports event for these students,” said Megan Bonacci, Associate Director of Special Education for the Rochester City School District. “This is an opportunity for them to show what they can do. They have been working all summer not just on academics, but on building their skills in preparation for this. They are here not just to participate; they are here to compete and to build friendships.”

“I am so proud of all of you for coming out and making a commitment to give your effort,” said Malik Evans, Mayor of Rochester. “Whether or not you win today, I want you to live up to that attempt in the Special Olympics oath that says, “Let me be brave in my attempt.” By you getting in the arena, you have already won.”

Today’s festivities included appearances by Spikes, the mascot of the Rochester Red Wings; Karen Iglesia from PrimeTime 585; members of the Monroe High School state championship football team; and members of the Rochester Police Department. The event highlighted the District’s commitment to providing inclusive opportunities that center the strengths, talents, and experiences of all students.
