Monroe High School Quarterback Terrell Cunningham Jr. Breaks Section V All-Time Passing Touchdown Record

(September 21, 2026) On Friday, September 18, Monroe High School senior quarterback Terrell Cunningham Jr. etched his name into the high school football record books while leading the Red Jackets to a hard-fought 12-7 victory over a talented East High team.
Cunningham Jr. threw his 77th career passing touchdown during the first quarter, breaking the Section V record previously held by Aquinas standout Jake Zembiec. Named MVP of the game, Cunningham Jr. threw for two touchdowns on the night, guiding Monroe (3-0) to a 12-7 victory over rival East/World of Inquiry (1-1) at East High School.
For Cunningham Jr., setting the Section V record represents years of unwavering commitment to his game and to the Red Jackets program.
“It’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time,” said the quarterback. “Ever since I stepped foot on a high school field, I knew it was my turn, that it was going to be something special.”
Coach Cunningham, who is also the senior quarterback’s father, reflected on his son’s lifelong dedication and role in elevating Monroe football.
“When I came over to Monroe in 2018 as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator, he was always with me on my hip,” said the elder Cunningham. “He’s been around this program for the majority of the years that we’ve had varsity football in some way, shape, or form. Whether he was up there at the field, running around, practicing with our guys. He’s been a major part of this program’s building. I’m thankful to be the head coach, and I’m really thankful to be his dad.”
