Edison Career and Technology High School Students Unveil Mosaic Honoring Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Students at Edison Career and Technology High School unveiled a striking mosaic on Friday morning honoring Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, celebrating her determination and public service.

The installation is the third in a series of tributes by students in Edison’s Construction, Architecture, and Design Pathway honoring influential women.  New this year was the collaboration with Edison’s Lead ELA Instructor, Phillip Konecny, who worked closely with students to support the development, revision, and completion of student letters written to Justice Sotomayor. The letters were delivered along with images of the completed mosaic project to Justice Sotomayor in Washington, D.C.

The mosaic was assembled in May, and there was a specific “build day” that brought Edison students and local female masons together. Working side-by-side, they transformed student-designed concepts into a permanent work of art that now graces the school’s Women’s Memorial Hall.

“It’s always something I can come back to Edison and look at and say I did that, I worked on that, and I was a part of that,” said Jaymaiyah Ward, a senior at Edison.

This year’s project was supported by UNICON, the Bricklayers Union of Rochester, Tile Wholesalers, and Tiny Fish Printing, all of which provided materials, resources, and mentorship essential to the project’s success. The Sotomayor mosaic follows previous pathway creations, including “The Black Rosies,” a mural honoring the contributions of African American female workers during World War II, and last year’s installation honoring former First Lady Michelle Obama.
