Virtual Academy of Rochester Senior Wins Advertising Award at RIT Art Show

(January 23, 2026) The Rochester City School District congratulates Takiyah Reid, a senior enrolled in the Virtual Academy of Rochester (VAR) and attending East High School, for having her award-winning photo, "Skybound," selected for the Advertising Award at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s art show.

Takiyah’s photo was chosen by RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences as part of the "Start Here" exhibition, which annually features student artwork from across the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions. RIT's College of Art and Design faculty select the top works in various media and disciplines to be featured in the exhibition.

She earned this recognition through VAR’s dual-credit digital photography course, offered in partnership with RIT and taught by Susan Rudy. The course allows students to earn college credit while still in high school and provides access to college-level instruction, professional equipment, and editing tools — giving students the resources to bridge the path to higher education.

“Takiyah is the kind of student who fully commits to her craft," said Susan Rudy, her VAR teacher. "Earning an Advertising Award from RIT is a significant honor that speaks to her creativity, discipline, and ability to compete at a collegiate level while still in high school. Having her work selected by college faculty reflects both her talent and what is possible when students are given meaningful opportunities, and it is a proud moment for VAR and the District.”

The show is open until February 7 at the Bevier Gallery in James Booth Hall at RIT. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 23, from 5–8 p.m., with the awards ceremony taking place from 6–7 p.m.

Takiyah’s achievement is a shining example of how RCSD students excel when given the tools and opportunities to showcase their vision on a collegiate stage, highlighting the unique programs offered through VAR that help students reach their full potential.
