Andrew Langston and Northwest Middle Schools Host Collaborative Career Day

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans speaks to students during a joint Career Day at the Douglass Campus, an event designed to help Andrew Langston and Northwest Middle School students explore future career pathways.

On Thursday, March 19, Andrew Langston and Northwest Middle Schools hosted a joint Career Day at the Douglass Campus. The event featured more than 70 professionals from industries such as healthcare, education, technology, and skilled trades. Among the notable guests were Rochester Mayor Malik Evans and representatives from public radio and television.

The presence of media professionals sparked interest as students talked about their favorite PBS programs from childhood, including shows like Daniel Tiger, Sesame Street, and Wild Kratts.

Throughout the morning, students participated in two interactive sessions to learn directly from these experts about their daily responsibilities. The interactions allowed students to understand the specific journeys and educational paths required for these diverse roles.

"It is really important because we want to make sure that they are exposed to careers that they can get inspired by," said LaCassa Felton, Principal of Andrew Langston Middle School. "We have really looked at our own instructional practices and how we can make some shifts and how we can provide a way for them to stay connected not only through middle and high school, but beyond."

The collaborative effort was designed to help students explore future pathways and connect their classroom learning to tangible opportunities. By bringing two middle schools together, Andrew Langston and Northwest Middle Schools continue to strengthen community partnerships and provide students with a roadmap for future success.
