• Welcome to Reading!!!

My name is Michelle Heckman and I am a 7th and 8th grade reading teacher. I have certifications in both literacy birth-12 and TESOL K-12. In the coming year, I look forward to sharing my passion for reading and writing with East scholars. I will teach both Scholastic's Read 180 program and Nancie Atwell's Reader's and Writer's Workshop. During each class, students rotate through three centers. Read 180 students complete (1) guided reading, (2) computer software (word study, reading strategies, and fluency), and (3) independent reading. Workshop students complete (1) guided instruction, (2) independent writing, and (3) independent reading. It is my priority to help each scholar achieve his/her educational goals to become a stronger reader and writer. Our classroom is a sacred place to learn and grow. I will do my very best to ensure that scholars grow in their ability and confidence as readers and writers. In terms of grading, I keep students updated on their grades in my class by printing off progress reports and conferencing with each student every two weeks. Students are graded according to on task behavior (80%) and class work (20%). If students are engaged and participating then they will find success. Students always have the option to revise their work.
