Children start at the age of 3, and stay with the same teacher until they are ready for first grade. Each year, as the kindergarten children go on to first grade, new three year olds come in to the class.  This gives a sense of order, comfort, and familiarity to the chidren. It also helps create a more natural group, as age differences are what children experience in their world outside of the classroom. People who observe a Montessori class in action are pleasently surprised by the remarkable little society that has been formed by the children.  They work individually and in small groups with materials that they are developmentally ready for. For example, a 3 year old may be working with matching color tablets, while a 5 year old may be working out multiplication tables.
