The Rochester Preschool Parent Program...
  • Has two primary goals:
    • Increase the potential for School sucess and optimal development of young children by offering developmenally appropriate experiences in a group setting
    • Strengthen the parent as primary teacher and guide of the young child
  • Operates 33 groups at 18 sites, 17 schools and 1 YMCA with a group size of 16-20 children.
  • Combines educational group experiences for 4-year-olds (and combined 4's and 3's) with weekly educational group sessions for the parent or surrogate parent.
  • Is a mainstream program open to any city resident family.
  • Involves no monetary cost to parents; however in some groups, parents provide juice and snacks for the children.
  • Is staffed by a parent group leader, a certified preschool teacher, and one or two paraprofessionals (parents of children in the group who receive training by the teacher and paparprofessionals and other mentors).
  • Saves inclusion placement in every daytime group for children with special needs.
  • Produces "graduates" who score approximately 20 points higher in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade standardized reading and math tests.
  • Actively participates in the Rochester Early Enhancement Project (REEP), a collaborative of 16 community agencies.
  • Supplements the regular program with a collaborative home visiting component funded by the United Way and connected with the Rochester Family Resource Network and Parents As Teachers (PAT), a nationally validated program.
