Charles Carroll School No. 46 is a learning community in which each classroom strives to make the language of thinking a permanent part of the learning environment. Staff, students, parents, and volunteers work together to develop students who have a positive attitude toward learning and are committed to meeting high expectations both academically and socially. Our goal is to instill a “love of learning” in all students so that they will become lifelong learners. Our School Improvement Plan and instructional program place an emphasis on literacy and math. Students’ individual learning styles and needs are honored and student achievement is promoted through curriculum, instruction, assessment and staff development aligned to New York State Standards.
- An uninterrupted literacy block of two hours is provided daily, including Readers and Writers Workshop. Leveled reading materials support instruction and independent reading by students.
- An uninterrupted math block of one hour is provided daily for Math Workshop. An Accelerated Math Program is offered at grades 4-6.
- Computer lab is accessible daily by all students. Compass and Lexia computer programs support math and reading and provide activities for acceleration.
- Academic Intervention Specialists provide instructional support to students and professional development to staff and closely monitor individual student achievement.
- Values-based character education is offered through PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies).
- Intensive Artist in Residence Program is offered schoolwide each spring. Visual Arts program showcases student work in local exhibits.
- Volunteers from Roberts Wesleyan College and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church provide one-to-one instructional support for students in grades 1-2. Graduate students provide reading instruction in an extended-day program one day a week. Xerox Science Consultants conduct hands-on science lessons to enhance student learning.
- Has partnerships with Boy Scouts of America, City of Rochester Recreation Department (after-school program), Junior Achievement, and area colleges.
- Student activities include chorus, band, safety patrol, classroom helpers, lunchroom monitors, and service project volunteers.
- Has an Active PTA and offers numerous volunteer opportunities.
