Rochester Teacher Will Be Part of Civil War Reenactors at O’Rorke Bridge Dedication
Rochester teacher Alex Johnson has been a member of the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry reenactors for 12 years. Tomorrow, he’ll be carrying the American flag with his group when a famous member of the original 140th Volunteer Infantry is honored.
Johnson, a teacher at Rochester’s School No. 2 and the descendant of a Civil War veteran, will be on hand for the O’Rorke Bridge dedication tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. in honor of Col. Patrick O’Rorke.
O’Rorke and Johnson are both graduates of Rochester’s School No. 9. Several years ago, Johnson and his students produced a video of Rochester’s history that included a biography on O’Rorke. They also planted a tree in his honor on the grounds of the current School No. 9, 485 North Clinton Avenue. The school is located just a short distance from the church in which O’Rorke was married and is buried.
Tomorrow’s ceremony is the official opening of the O’Rorke Bridge, which connects Irondequoit’s Pattonwood Drive/Thomas Avenue area to Rochester’s Lake Avenue and the Charlotte neighborhood.
