Rochester City School District Joins National Effort To Encourage Fathers’ Involvement Beginning with First Day of School

NEWS RELEASE – ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
Date: September 4, 2007

Fathers and other male caregivers of Rochester students are being encouraged to take their children to school on the first day of school (Thursday, September 6) as the initial step in year-long involvement in their children’s education.

The Rochester City School District is joining other districts across the country in supporting the fourth annual “Million Father March,” a national campaign to mobilize fathers as active participants in their children’s school lives. Fathers in 200 cities are expected to wake their children, make them breakfast, check their book bags, and take them to school on the first day of the new school year.

Research shows that children whose fathers or other male caregivers take active roles in their educational lives do better in school, have fewer behavior problems, and are more likely to graduate from high school.

As part of a long-term commitment, fathers will be encouraged join the parent organization at their children’s schools, meet and keep in touch with their children’s teachers, attend parent-teacher meetings and school events, and volunteer.
