On August 28, 2007, a federal court ruled that the Rochester City School District can continue to use RTS buses to transport high school students to and from school until October 1.
“The Rochester City School District is pleased with the respite to October 1 provided in the court’s decision, which assures planned and dependable bus service for our high school students for the start of school,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. William C. Cala. “Our students will begin the year with the transportation arrangements they are accustomed to, and that’s good news.”
Letters detailing bus routes and time schedules for students were mailed to families on Thursday, August 30.
The District is making plans to address high school students’ transportation needs after October 1 and will inform parents and students when arrangements are finalized.
Background
On July 30, 2007, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) ordered Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA), which operates RTS bus service, to discontinue providing school bus services on certain routes in the City of Rochester. The FTA determined that RTS service on the routes at issue competed with private-sector school bus operators.
RGRTA appealed the order and sought to stay (delay) the FTA’s order pending final judicial review. On August 28, the federal court granted that stay until October 1, 2007. |
